Foundations of Leadership

Module 2

Preparation for Module 2

We look forward to seeing you again on the next module. There were a number of things to do following Module 1 to continue your leadership development journey. The specific ones we would like you to be ready to share in Module 2 are:

• A 90 second report back on how you got on with implementing your personal action plan from Module 1. You may have a longer discussion on this with your Peer Coach before the module, but this short report back will be for others as well.

• What you found in doing the Development Challenge that your Peer Coach set you.

We also asked you to bring a real and current business challenge that you are facing to the module. Over the three days you will get to apply some of the practical approaches to involving and influencing people on this challenge, so do ensure it is something that is important to you.

Module 2 is designed around the Leadership Capabilities of Initiate and Involve in the Vital Leader Framework. These are explored in Chapters 3 and 4 of the book, The Vital Leader, which you can download as a PDF. As with Module 1 we will be not be working through the chapters explicitly in the session, but you can read them for further stimulus or thinking around these two key elements.

Of course, if you have any questions about this preparation, or anything else to do with the programme please contact Phil Philp@maynardleigh.co.uk or Terry Terryh@maynardleigh.co.uk

There are several things outlined below for you to do in the time between Modules 2 and 3 to continue your FOL Development Journey.

Please also visit the Module 3 page on this Portal for specific preparation.

And for the two pairs who have the Leadership Briefs for Inspire and Improvise, you will be running your sessions in Module 3 so please be prepared and ready to do so.

Follow on actions

  • Meet with your Line Manager to share your personal learning insights and your action plan, and be specific about support you want from them. We recommend you book a time to see them just for this conversation, not as part of any operational updates you may have with them. In that meeting you could also update them on where you are with your Live Business Challenge, and talk through next steps.

  • Meet up with your Peer Coach to share progress on applying your learnings from the module, and support/challenge one another on how to keep taking opportunities to pursue your development goals. You might check if the nature of those goals has changed in the time since setting them. Another thing you could do would be to revisit the results of your 7Is Leadership Profiles together and reflect on where you are now in relation to them. Are there points in there to bring more focus to in the weeks ahead?

  • ‘Do It Now’ cards. Have a look at the Initiate and Involve cards – and pick a couple that it would be interesting or stretching to do. Or maybe that are in line with one of your development goals. Don’t spend to long deliberating which to pick – they are called ‘Do It Now’ cards for a reason! At the next module we’ll be interested to hear what value you made for yourself out of playing with the cards.

  • Prepare a personal ‘What Inspires Me’ communication. In order to inspire people we lead, we need to be in touch with our own sense of inspiration. So start by thinking about things that inspire you – it might be specific places, people, songs, films, poems, events, books, plays etc. Choose one to share with the group and prepare how you would communicate it within two minutes, so that we get as full a sense of possible of what it means to you and why. If there is an image or an object that you want to show to help convey that sense, that’s great, but please note this is not a ‘Create a powerpoint presentation’ brief! You will be sharing these talks in the first session of day 1.

  • Watch the Change Curve video. This is about 5 minutes long and outlines a model that we will work with on the next module. Please ensure you have viewed it before the first session. You can access the video on the Module 3 section of this portal, along with other specific preparation for the next module.
