Foundations of Leadership
Module 3
Preparation for Module 3
We look forward to seeing you again on the next module. There were a number of things to do following Module 2 to continue your leadership development journey. Please check the full list, but the specific ones we would like you to be ready to share in Module 3 are:
-
A 60 second report back on how you got on with implementing your personal action plan from Module 2. You may have a longer discussion on this with your Peer Coach before the module, but this short report back will be for others as well.
-
Your personal ‘What Inspires Me’ communication. Do practice this out loud before coming to the module, so you give yourself the best chance to give us as full a sense of possible of what inspires you, within the two minute limit.
-
Watch our video on the Change Curve. It’s about 5 minutes long, and in it our colleague Ian outlines a model that we will refer to from day 1 in Module 3.
-
We will also revisit your Live Business Challenge in the module, in the context of leading change, so do be ready to update your two colleagues you were in a group with on your progress since Module 2. If that business challenge is no longer live, please bring another one you are currently working on.
-
Module 3 is designed around the Leadership Capabilities of Inspire, Improvise and Implement in the Vital Leader Framework. These are explored in Chapters 5, 6 and 7 of the book, The Vital Leader, which you can download as a PDF The Vital Leader. As in previous modules we will be not be working through the chapters explicitly in the session, but you can read them for further stimulus or thinking around these three key elements.
Of course, if you have any questions about this preparation, or anything else to do with the programme please contact Debs deboraha@maynardleigh.co.uk or Terry terryh@maynardleigh.co.uk
Following Module 3
Congratulations! You have now completed the three modules of the programme, and we look forward to seeing you again at the Completion Event on April 14th. That will be an opportunity to reflect on the impact of putting your learning into action over the coming weeks, as well as to review your learning journey of the last six months. We will also use it to look forward, and to focus on your ongoing development as a leader in the months and years ahead.
Click on the links below to see the slides, flip charts and worksheets from Module 3.
So below are some suggestions of what you can do between now and then to embed the personal insights and learnings you have had through the programme.
Follow on Actions
- Book some time in your calendar to have a meeting with yourself to review all your notes from the programme, starting with your 7Is Leadership Profile, and then all that you have written in your Journal. As you do so, consider the following questions:
> What are the main insights into yourself and your leadership that you have had?
> Looking forward, what are the implications for how you want to lead?
> When you have put some of those insights into action in the last weeks and months – either on your Live Business Challenge or in other areas of your work – what have been some of the outcomes?
> Where else in your work and life do you want to have a different impact as a leader, and what qualities or approaches will you need to feature in order to do so?
- Meet with your Peer Coach, and separately with your Line Manager, to talk over your responses to these questions. See what fresh perspectives can you get from them on next steps forward in your Leadership
- Think about asking some of the people who filled out your 7I’s Leadership Profile for some informal up to date feedback on your Leadership. If you do this, remember that their feedback in the Profile was anonymised, so any conversation should be more about their current view of your leadership than a comparison to what they may have written back then.
- Imagine yourself in one year’s time, going back to the same people and asking for up to date feedback again – what would you hope they would say then?
There will be some specific preparation we will ask you to do nearer the Completion Event in April, which we will email you about…
In the meantime, we’d like to remind you of the Arthur Ashe quote we shared with you, that applies to so many aspects of leadership:
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
See you on the 12th May!
